Bio

I am currently a PhD student at the Visual Computing & AI Lab. Before this, I obtained my M.Sc. in Informatics at the Technical University of Munich and my B.Sc. in Computer Science at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, during which I spent one semester abroad at the University of South Australia in Adelaide. My present research focuses on reconstructing and rendering photorealistic human head avatars.

Research Interest

Inverse Rendering, Dynamic 3D Reconstruction, Neural Scene Representations

BecomingLit: Relightable Gaussian Avatars with Hybrid Neural Shading
Jonathan Schmidt, Simon Giebenhain, Matthias Nießner
NeurIPS 2025
BecomingLit reconstructs intrinsically decomposed head avatars based on 3D Gaussian primitives for real-time relighting and animation. To train our avatars, we introduce a novel multi-view light stage dataset.
